C- Conversation
Conversation should be:
On topic
At an acceptable noise level
Humorous at times
Questions are great!
Concerns are addressed during Conversation
H- Help
The "H" in C.H.A.M.P.S is for Help expectations.
By setting guidelines for when a student should ask a teacher the student learns collaboration amongst his/her peers.
These Help expectations set guidlines for when it is acceptable to ask a peer, a teacher, or use a resource when trying to resolve a task.
Classroom Applications
To clarify directions for an assignment (Peer/Teacher)
When taking a quiz/test
During Group Work
When finished with an assignment
A- Activity
Activity expectations relates to the "A" in C.H.A.M.P.S
Activity expectations are clearly designed rules for engaging in classroom activities that may or may not involve movement.
Classroom Applications
When engaged in team centered games (Jeopardy, Twigging, Friendly Family Fued)
When participating in peer centered activities (Inner/outer Circle, Talking Chips, Think-Ink-Share, Grafitti Board)
For Independent Work
M- Movement
"M" stands for Movement Expectations
This gives students guidelines on when it is and is not appropriate to leave their seats.
Classroom Applications
To stretch (during a lecture)
To Stand (for students who have troubling sitting for periods of time)
To use the restroom (when it is appropriate, e.g. not interrupting, waiting until after the teacher has finished talking)
Transitioning from one activity to the next
P- Participation
Paticipation is the "P" in C.H.A.M.P.S
This is a great opportunity for the teacher to describe what Participation looks like. There are many ways to participate. It is also important for students to know that sometimes it is okay to not participate (such as in a group discussion). During such occasions the teacher can let the student know it is okay not to participate that day and he/she can do other activities to show participation (acting as a scribe, passing out materials, helping other students).
Classroom Applications
During class discussions
Working independently during group work
Being on-time
Sharing
C + H + A + M + P =

When you do all these things you achieve Success!
